Photo to GIF Maker

Pick a photo, choose a zoom or a pan, and download a looping GIF. Everything runs in your browser: the photo is never uploaded, and there is no watermark, account or export limit.

A photo to GIF maker turns one still picture into a short animation by slowly moving a crop across it, the pan-and-zoom look often called the Ken Burns effect.

Your photo is opened in your browser and never uploaded. Only use photos you have the right to use.

How to turn a photo into a GIF

Choose a JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF photo up to 25 MB. Pick a motion, a frame shape and a length, watch the live preview, then select Make GIF and download the file. The GIF is drawn and encoded on your device.

The output is never larger than your photo allows: a small picture gives a small GIF rather than a blurry, stretched one.

  • Length: 2 to 6 seconds.
  • Size: 320, 480, 640 px on the longest edge.
  • Frame rate: 10 or 15 fps.
  • Zoom strength: 110% to 160%.
  • Frame shape: original, square 1:1, portrait 4:5, wide 16:9 or vertical 9:16.

Picture to GIF and image to GIF in your browser

Picture to GIF, image to GIF and photo to GIF all do the same thing here: one still image in, one looping GIF out. Any JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF image up to 25 MB works, whether it is a camera photo, a screenshot, a drawing or a still from an AI image tool.

The image is decoded, animated and encoded on your device, so a private picture never leaves your browser.

Pan and zoom settings

Zoom in starts on the full picture and moves closer to the center; zoom out does the reverse. Pan left, right, up and down slide a slightly zoomed view across the photo. Higher zoom strength gives a bigger move.

Bounce plays the move forward and back so the GIF loops without a jump. Restart plays it forward and starts again from the first frame, which suits a slow reveal.

Keep the photo GIF small

A GIF holds at most 256 colors, so photos with soft skies or skin tones can show bands or grain. The tool builds one shared palette from the start, middle and end of the move, which keeps colors steady from frame to frame.

File size grows with the pixel size, the length and the frame rate. For chat apps, start at 480 px, 3 seconds and 15 fps; if the file is too big, try 320 px or 10 fps.

What this photo to GIF tool does not do

It moves a virtual camera across a still photo. It does not use AI, does not invent new motion inside the picture, and does not send your photo to ChatGPT, OpenAI or any other service. Video files, several photos in one GIF and text are not supported here.

To put words on the finished GIF, download it and use Add text to GIF.

For a GIF made inside ChatGPT, read the ChatGPT GIF guide.

When to use the AI GIF generator instead

Photo to GIF moves a camera across a still image; nothing inside the picture moves. For a GIF where the scene itself moves, such as sparks rising from a campfire or a fox blinking in the snow, use the AI GIF generator (GPT Image 2.6 via KIE). It makes an AI-animated GIF from a text prompt; it is a paid tool and sends your prompt to KIE.

Making a greeting? A typed birthday GIF with name spells every letter exactly, and you can send it next to your photo GIF.

Frequently asked questions

Is the photo to GIF maker free?

Yes. Making and downloading a GIF here costs nothing, adds no watermark and needs no account.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The photo is opened, animated and encoded in your browser. It is never sent to a server or stored.

Which photo formats work?

JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF files up to 25 MB that your browser can open. Convert HEIC photos to JPG first if your browser cannot read them.

Is picture to GIF the same as image to GIF?

Yes. Picture to GIF, image to GIF and photo to GIF all mean turning one still image into a looping GIF. This tool takes JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF images up to 25 MB.

Does this tool use AI?

No. It only moves a crop across your photo with a pan or zoom, on your device. It does not generate new motion, and it does not use ChatGPT or the OpenAI API. For real AI animation from a prompt, use the typinggif AI GIF generator instead.

Can I add a caption to the GIF?

Yes. Download the GIF, then open it in the add text to GIF tool to place a caption on every frame.

Why does my GIF look grainy or banded?

GIF stores at most 256 colors per palette. Photos with smooth gradients lose some shades; a smaller size or a picture with flatter colors looks cleaner.
