How to Make a ChatGPT GIF with GPT Image 2.6
With GPT Image 2.6 you can ask ChatGPT for a short animated GIF, and developers can request one through the OpenAI API. This guide covers what a ChatGPT GIF can do today, the real frame and timing limits, how to export a clean loop, and what to use when the GIF needs exact, readable text.
typinggif is an independent site and is not affiliated with OpenAI; ChatGPT is a trademark of OpenAI. The limits below reflect the API as of November 5, 2026 and may change.
Can ChatGPT make a GIF? How to ask for one
Describe the motion, not just the subject. A good request names what moves, how many frames you want, how fast each frame plays, and whether the last frame should lead back into the first. Short, simple motion works best: a bobbing boat, a blinking light, a waving flag.
Ask for a plain or flat background and no text. Busy scenes and photographic gradients lose detail once they are reduced to the 256 colors a GIF can hold.
- Example request you can adapt:
Make an animated GIF: a paper boat bobbing on small waves, side view, flat illustration, 9 frames, about 200 ms per frame, seamless loop, plain light-blue background, no text. - Name the frame count and the speed; otherwise the defaults are used.
- Say "seamless loop" so the end flows back into the start.
- Keep one subject and one motion per GIF.
GPT Image GIF limits: frames and timing
The GPT Image 2.6 API controls a GIF with two settings. The docs list frame_count from 2 to 64, but the API currently accepts about 2 to 16 frames, with a default of 9. frame_duration_ms sets how long each frame shows, from 20 to 2000 milliseconds, with a default of 200.
Loop length is frames multiplied by frame duration. The defaults give 9 × 200 ms = 1.8 seconds. With roughly 16 frames as the practical ceiling, smooth motion and a long loop pull against each other: 16 frames at 100 ms is a smooth 1.6 second loop, while 16 frames at 500 ms lasts 8 seconds but looks choppy.
| Setting | Range | Default | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| frame_count | 2–64 in the docs; about 2–16 accepted in practice | 9 | Ask for 16 frames or fewer |
| frame_duration_ms | 20–2000 ms | 200 ms | 100–200 ms reads as smooth motion |
Export tips for a clean ChatGPT GIF
Download the original file instead of copying or screenshotting it; a copied image often pastes as a single still frame. Open the download in a browser to check that it moves and loops the way you asked.
If the loop jumps at the end, ask for a seamless loop again, or ask for a back-and-forth motion that returns to the first frame. If you get a still picture or a grid of frames instead of a GIF, ask again for an animated GIF.
A still from ChatGPT can also become a GIF without another request: open it in Photo to GIF and add a slow pan or zoom in your browser. That adds camera movement only; it does not invent new motion in the scene.
- Flat colors and simple shapes survive the 256-color GIF palette best.
- Fewer frames and a smaller size give a lighter file for chat apps.
- Resize or crop only with a tool that keeps every frame.
Precise text in a ChatGPT GIF
Image models redraw any lettering in every frame, so words can wobble, change spelling or shift between frames. Small text and long sentences suffer most. If text must appear, keep it to one to three large words and check each frame.
For exact words, ask ChatGPT for the animation with no text, then put the caption on afterwards with Add text to GIF. Your GIF stays in your browser while you edit it.
If the whole GIF is text, such as a typing effect or a looping slogan, draw it with real fonts instead, so every letter is exact: try Typewriter text GIF or the Text GIF generator.
A dedicated AI GIF generator on typinggif
If you want a GIF from one prompt without a ChatGPT conversation, typinggif has a separate AI GIF generator (GPT Image 2.6 via KIE). It is a paid typinggif tool that returns a square 1K GIF with 4 frames. It is not ChatGPT, and typinggif is not affiliated with OpenAI.
Its letters have the same per-frame wobble, so keep text out of the prompt there too. Use the AI GIF maker for one prompt and one downloadable result; stay in ChatGPT when you want to refine the GIF over several messages. For exact words, make a typing text GIF instead.
Make the GIF you need
Pick the tool that matches the GIF: typed text, an animated text banner, a caption on an existing GIF, a photo with camera motion, or a GIF made from a prompt.
How to make your animation
Describe the motion
Name the subject, the single motion, a plain background and "no text".
Set frames and speed
Ask for 16 frames or fewer and a frame time between 100 and 200 ms; the defaults are 9 frames at 200 ms.
Download and check the loop
Save the original file and open it in a browser to confirm it moves and loops.
Add exact text separately
Put captions on afterwards with a GIF text editor so every letter is correct.
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT make a GIF?
Yes. With GPT Image 2.6 you can ask ChatGPT for a short animated GIF. Describe the motion, the number of frames and the speed. If you get a still picture, ask again for an animated GIF, or add a pan or zoom to the still with a photo to GIF tool.
How many frames can a GPT Image GIF have?
The API docs list frame_count from 2 to 64, but the API currently accepts about 2 to 16 frames. The default is 9 frames.
How long can each frame play?
frame_duration_ms accepts 20 to 2000 milliseconds per frame, with a default of 200 ms. At the defaults, a loop lasts 1.8 seconds.
Why is the text in my ChatGPT GIF wrong or wobbly?
The model redraws the letters in every frame, so they can change between frames. Ask for the animation without text and add the words afterwards with a GIF text editor that uses real fonts.
Is typinggif part of ChatGPT or OpenAI?
No. typinggif is independent and not affiliated with OpenAI. Our AI GIF generator sends prompts to KIE (GPT Image 2.6 via KIE), while our text, caption, and photo GIF tools run in your browser.
Should I use an AI GIF maker instead of ChatGPT?
Use ChatGPT when you want to refine a GIF over several messages. Use a dedicated AI GIF maker, such as the paid typinggif AI GIF generator (GPT Image 2.6 via KIE), when you want one prompt and one downloadable result. For exact text, use a typing text GIF maker instead.
